PRINCIPLES
- TECHNIQUES
imaginary lines
The weapon, that is the fists, feet, elbows, knees etc
travel some distance before reaching their target. The path the attacks
travells is to be manipulated and controlled. If you look at somebodies
kamae you can see their understanding of technique. Or, you could
say his way of training.
For example, kickboxers often have their kamae very
close to the body and relatively high. They protect the jaw and liver.
A keen concept. But I think it's rather primitive. I will try to explain
it with the following image.

AJ van Dijk - Naoki Ishikawa kamae posture of kihon
gumite ipponme in Romania 2007
I think the line in the picture speaks for itself, it
is the line that the fist follows if the first attack was to be done
to the head. It is not a front viewing picture, but Shihan Ishikawa
closes the seichusen to his chudan. Both hands are ready to attack.
The first point to note is that by closing the chudan seichusen, pressure
is applied to make ukemi attack to jodan. (There is the manipulation)
As you can see, the right hand is just below the line of attack. This
means that by just little movement the attack can be defended. (the
control)
I said before something about the high kamae of kickboxers.
They refer the defense to be at Nr. 2, while wadoryu refers the defense
to start from Nr 1. You shouldn't be concerned about what parts of
the body to protect at the end of the line, but you should be concerned
about how to protect parts of the body from the start of this or these
lines.
This is to protect the seichusen and be in a state of
attack at all times. Also think about what kamae changes to timing
and effort. All change depending on the kamae. Don't waste your energy
defending. Use your energy attacking.
One extra example..

This video is on YouTube and one of the comments is
as follows:
"How about protecting your own head when/after
tdoing the uraken?? Chin down maybe??"
My reply:
"There a 2 points to note.
We consider solar plexus important to protect, that is what I'm doing
now. Also, protecting this will point my fist towards my opponent
and thus having it ready to attack in the shortest and quickest way
as possible.
I cover the centerline with my attacking arm. So actually you refer
the defense from end of the line ending up at my face (2), while Irefer
the defense at the start of the line (1). (imagine a line between
the weapon of your opponent till it's possible target)".
